Torcal. For now, Bentley has chosen to reveal mainly a name, allowing the rest of its new car to remain partly in the shadows. It inevitably builds anticipation, because behind those six letters lies something more significant than the arrival of another model: Bentley’s fourth product line and the formal entry of the Crewe marque into the fully electric era.
The new Torcal will be unveiled in London on 23 September 2026. Until then, Bentley is building the story gradually, beginning with the model’s identity and the meaning of a name connecting nature, movement and one of the qualities historically associated with a Bentley: the ability to make powerful progress feel almost effortless.
A fourth Bentley alongside three familiar names
Torcal will enter the range as Bentley’s fourth product line, joining Continental GT, Flying Spur and Bentayga.
It is therefore not being introduced simply as an electric version of an existing Bentley. Giving the car its own name suggests an intention to create a distinct identity within the family while retaining the qualities Bentley considers fundamental since 1919: performance, comfort, craftsmanship and exceptional materials.
That may be the project’s most delicate challenge. Moving to electric propulsion involves far more than replacing an engine. For a marque such as Bentley, it means deciding which elements of its personality can survive such a profound technological transition without losing their identity.
A name from Andalusia
Like Bentayga, Bacalar and Batur, Torcal takes its name from a real place.
El Torcal de Antequera in Andalusia is a landscape defined by remarkable limestone formations shaped by nature over millions of years. Stacked rocks, cliffs and almost labyrinthine passages create an immediately recognisable environment.
The choice continues a modern Bentley tradition of connecting certain models to extraordinary locations capable of evoking travel, landscape and exclusivity at the same time.
With Torcal, however, there is another layer to the name.
From Torcal to torque
Bentley points to the connection between Torcal and the Latin torquere, meaning “to twist”, the same root associated with the modern word torque.
It is an especially appropriate association for an electric car. Immediate torque delivery is one of the most recognisable characteristics of electric propulsion, although Bentley uses the reference more broadly to evoke the effortless sense of progress that has characterised many of its cars.
The name therefore brings together two very different worlds: an ancient landscape slowly shaped by nature and a technology representing one of the most radical changes in automotive history.
The first fully electric Bentley
Torcal also represents a transition that would have seemed considerably more difficult to imagine only a few years ago: it will be the first fully electric Bentley.
The interesting question will not simply concern power, range or charging times. Those figures will matter once Bentley officially reveals the car, but the more important issue is character.
For more than a century, part of Bentley’s identity has been built around large engines, abundant torque, seemingly effortless acceleration and a distinctive ability to combine performance with long-distance comfort.
An electric powertrain inevitably changes part of that language.
Bentley therefore has to demonstrate that a car can lose its combustion engine without losing the qualities that make it immediately recognisable as a Bentley.
Craftsmanship in an increasingly technological car
There is another challenge that may be less obvious but equally significant.
Bentleys are still closely associated with handcraftsmanship in Crewe, leather, wood, metal and an extensive capacity for personalisation. Contemporary electric cars, by contrast, are often described through batteries, software, screens and digital systems.
Torcal will have to bring those two languages together.
Bentley is placing particular emphasis on the continuity of its craftsmanship: technology changes, but the way a car feels, is touched and experienced must continue to retain a material and human dimension.
In a market where differences cannot be measured only through horsepower or acceleration, the ability to preserve craftsmanship in the digital era could become one of the new car’s most interesting qualities.
A Bentley before it is an electric car
Bentley Chairman and CEO Frank-Steffen Walliser has described Torcal as a car intended to establish new benchmarks in the areas that matter to the marque, even suggesting that it may be the most considered car in Bentley’s history.
It is an ambitious statement, but it clearly illustrates the direction.
Bentley does not appear to want Torcal to be perceived simply as “the electric Bentley”. It wants it to be recognised as a Bentley first.
The distinction may appear subtle, but it could prove crucial. Electrification then stops being the central story and becomes one of the tools through which comfort, performance, refinement and long-distance travel can be interpreted differently.
On 23 September we will discover the rest
For now, Bentley has deliberately chosen not to reveal everything.
Torcal will make its official debut in London on 23 September 2026, when its design, technology, performance and positioning can finally be assessed in full.
Until then, perhaps the most revealing aspect is what Bentley has decided to communicate first: not numbers, but identity.
A name inspired by an Andalusian landscape, a new product line and the marque’s first fully electric model.
After more than a century of powerful engines, handcrafted luxury and grand touring, the question is not simply how fast Torcal will be.
It is how Bentley has chosen to remain Bentley without a combustion engine.
The answer is only days away.
