Vertigo, 67 metres to rediscover the pleasure of sailing

Created for long-range cruising, Vertigo combines genuine sailing capability, interiors by Christian Liaigre and an onboard lifestyle closely connected to the sea

At 67.2 metres in length, Vertigo belongs to a category of large sailing yachts where sailing is far more than an aesthetic reference. Built in 2011 by New Zealand shipyard Alloy Yachts to a design by Philippe Briand, she was conceived for long-distance cruising while combining performance, comfort and the ability to spend extended periods at sea.

Today Vertigo is available for charter and spends the summer season in the Mediterranean, cruising between Italy, France, Greece, Croatia and Montenegro while retaining the much broader ambition behind her original design: to be a genuine yacht for travelling the world.

A yacht created to sail

Vertigo was one of the most significant projects completed by Alloy Yachts. When launched in 2011, her 67.2-metre length made her the largest yacht built by the shipyard and one of the largest sailing yachts constructed in the Southern Hemisphere.

Philippe Briand developed the exterior lines and sailing architecture around a clear objective: creating a yacht capable of travelling around the world without losing the qualities of a genuine large sailing yacht.

The result is an aluminium ketch with a 12.53-metre beam, a volume of 837 GT and a design where substantial dimensions and sailing ability coexist without turning Vertigo into a motor yacht carrying masts.

Space replaces ostentation

French designer Christian Liaigre was responsible for the interiors, approaching Vertigo with a language far removed from traditional nautical styling. The original idea was expressed through the concept of Urban at Sea: contemporary, restrained and bright spaces intended to evoke a large residence rather than the conventional interior of a yacht.

Extensive glazing maintains a strong visual connection with the surroundings, while materials, furniture and proportions favour understated elegance. Years after her launch, this approach still gives the interior a distinctive character without depending on decorative solutions tied too closely to a particular design period.

Twelve guests without sacrificing space

Vertigo accommodates up to 12 guests in five cabins, supported by a crew of 11. The layout is designed to alternate shared areas with more private spaces during longer periods on board.

On a yacht of this size, however, comfort is not defined by the cabins alone. Much of the experience comes from the relationship between the interiors and the outdoor decks. Social areas, sunbathing spaces, alfresco dining and viewpoints overlooking the sailing action allow guests to change perspective throughout the day.

The sea remains at the centre of the experience

One of Vertigo’s most appealing characteristics is the way the yacht keeps the water genuinely accessible. The gym, for example, opens directly towards the sea, allowing guests to move from a workout to a swim without crossing the yacht’s main living areas.

A deck Jacuzzi, open-air cinema and an extensive collection of water sports equipment add further dimensions to life on board. The tender fleet includes an 8-metre limo tender, while kayaks, Seabobs, an e-foil, paddleboards, sailing dinghies and equipment for waterskiing, wakeboarding and scuba diving broaden the possibilities once the yacht reaches an anchorage.

These features turn a charter from simply spending time aboard into a base from which to experience the sea in many different ways.

The 2019 refit and a new chapter

In 2019 Vertigo underwent a major refit, allowing the yacht to be updated while preserving the identity of the original project.

This is an important stage in the life of a yacht launched in 2011. Large sailing yachts of this kind are designed to remain relevant far longer than ordinary model cycles in the market. Maintenance, technical upgrades and refits therefore become a natural part of their story.

Vertigo continues to sail while retaining the relationship between naval architecture, design and practical functionality that defined her from the beginning.

From ocean passages to Mediterranean summers

Her world-cruising vocation is also reflected in the technical specifications. Ocean Independence lists a range under power of approximately 4,000 nautical miles, twin Caterpillar C32 engines and all-aluminium construction.

During the summer season, however, her world becomes more intimate. Vertigo is offered for charter throughout the Mediterranean, covering destinations along the Italian and French coasts as well as the Adriatic and Aegean.

For a yacht designed to cross oceans, moving between a Sardinian bay, a Greek island or the Croatian coast may seem like relatively compact cruising. Yet this ability to adapt to very different routes remains one of the qualities that makes the project interesting even fifteen years after launch.

A charter that retains the meaning of a journey

Ocean Independence currently offers Vertigo with an indicative rate starting from €360,000 per week, with additional expenses applying according to standard charter terms.

The rate inevitably places her at the upper end of the market, but it explains only part of what Vertigo represents. Her distinctive quality is the opportunity to experience a large sailing yacht conceived not as a static setting, but as a vessel designed to continually change horizons.

In the Mediterranean, that means moving between sailing passages, anchorages and harbours while preserving something that still belongs uniquely to sailing: the feeling that reaching the destination is only part of the experience, and that the route itself matters too.
