Apreamare Gozzo 42, the Sorrento gozzo evolves without losing its identity

The Apreamare Gozzo 42 is built around an identity that does not need to be reinvented, but can certainly evolve. Its reference remains the traditional Sorrento gozzo, with its direct relationship with the sea and a boating culture shaped over generations, while its dimensions, onboard layout and technology belong firmly to the present.

With an overall length of 12.80 metres and a maximum beam of 4.20 metres, the new model joins the Gozzo range as a boat designed to be genuinely used throughout the day, moving between cruising, time at anchor and relaxed social moments. Tradition is therefore only part of its character; equally important is the way that heritage has been adapted to contemporary life on the water.

Mediterranean life happens mostly outdoors

A substantial part of the Gozzo 42 has been dedicated to exterior living. The deck features two sunbathing areas, a cockpit conceived for socialising, a configurable wet bar and an aft platform equipped with a tender lift.

The arrangement feels particularly natural in the Mediterranean. A day aboard may begin with a cruise along the coast, continue at anchor in a quiet bay and gradually turn into an outdoor lunch or an afternoon spent close to the water. A boat therefore needs to move easily between these different moments without requiring every area to perform only one function.

The hard top follows the same philosophy. It extends further aft to provide a larger shaded area, while a fully enclosed glass windscreen is available on request. This makes the boat more comfortable across a wider range of weather conditions and potentially extends the period during which it can be enjoyed.

A gozzo that is also ready to travel

Its open character does not restrict the Gozzo 42 to short day trips. Below deck there is an owner’s cabin, while a separate second cabin with two single berths can be specified as an option.

Hull and deck windows bring natural light into the sleeping accommodation, making the lower deck an integral part of the onboard experience rather than simply somewhere to retire at the end of the day.

This flexibility also makes the model attractive to owners who want to go beyond day cruising, turning a sequence of bays, harbours and coastal destinations into a genuine itinerary. In the Mediterranean, this could mean travelling in relatively short stages while retaining the possibility of comfortably spending the night aboard.

Shaft drive or IPS, two interpretations of the same boat

One of the more interesting technical aspects of the project is its propulsion flexibility. The variable-geometry hull with lifting strakes has been developed to work with either a traditional shaft-drive system or Volvo Penta IPS propulsion.

This choice represents more than a technical specification. It allows owners to approach the Gozzo 42 according to their own cruising preferences, retaining on one side a configuration closely connected to conventional marine engineering while offering a more contemporary propulsion solution on the other.

The most recently published configurations include twin Volvo Penta D6 engines rated at 380 or 480 hp with shaft drives, or twin Volvo Penta IPS 500 or IPS 600 units.

Speed for cruising, not simply for arriving

According to the latest figures published for the model, the Gozzo 42 reaches a maximum speed of approximately 30 knots, while cruising speed ranges from around 22 to 27 knots depending on the configuration.

These figures suit a boat that does not appear interested in defining itself through outright speed. What matters more is the ability to maintain comfortable passage speeds between destinations while preserving the seakeeping qualities that have long been part of the shipyard’s philosophy.

A 1,200-litre fuel tank extends the boat’s cruising possibilities and reinforces the idea that the Gozzo 42 is intended not only for a day at sea but also for more ambitious coastal itineraries.

The helm becomes part of the experience

The helm station has also been redesigned. Its ergonomic layout can accommodate either three 13-inch displays or two 17-inch screens, bringing navigation and onboard system management into a decidedly contemporary environment.

This is one of the areas where the evolution of the gozzo concept becomes particularly visible. Character is not preserved through a nostalgic recreation of the past, but through proportions, functions and sensations, while technology makes the boat easier and more intuitive to use.

Twelve metres designed to work with friends aboard

The Gozzo 42 can accommodate up to 14 people. This figure helps explain the philosophy behind the deck layout: the boat needs to work as a sociable environment without sacrificing freedom of movement.

With a declared light displacement of 11.5 tonnes and 14.5 tonnes at full load, a draft of approximately one metre and CE Design Category B certification, the new Apreamare remains manageable in size while offering spaces and equipment that considerably expand its role beyond that of a conventional day boat.

Evolving an icon can be harder than creating a new one

Perhaps the most revealing aspect of the Gozzo 42 is what Apreamare has chosen not to leave behind. The Sorrento shipyard continues to use the gozzo as its starting point without turning the new model into a nostalgic reference to another era.

The result is a boat with a strong relationship to its place of origin but a language that can be understood internationally. Large outdoor spaces, configurable accommodation, alternative propulsion systems and a deck designed around time spent together express a way of enjoying the sea that belongs naturally to the Sorrento coast, yet feels equally at home along many other Mediterranean routes.

The Gozzo 42 will make its world premiere at the 2026 Cannes Yachting Festival from 8 to 13 September. Cannes will provide its international debut, but the character of the boat will probably become clearer away from the show itself: cruising along the coast, anchored in front of a bay, or during those days when there is simply no particular reason to return to harbour early.
