Blancpain Fifty Fathoms and Bathyscaphe, two anniversaries born from the sea

Blancpain explores seventy years of diving-watch history through the Fifty Fathoms 70th Anniversary Act 1 and the new Bathyscaphe 70th Anniversary

From the 1953 Fifty Fathoms to the 1956 Bathyscaphe, two Blancpain anniversary editions offer different interpretations of the same maritime heritage

The sea has accompanied the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms since 1953, and today that story continues through two anniversaries that reflect different periods and different approaches to the diving watch. First came the Fifty Fathoms 70th Anniversary Act 1, also interpreted in 2023 as a unique piece for Only Watch; now comes the Bathyscaphe 70th Anniversary, introduced in 2026 as a limited edition of 300 pieces.

The two celebrations are three years apart because the watches themselves were born at different moments. The Fifty Fathoms made its public debut in 1953, while the Bathyscaphe followed in 1956 as an expression created for a new generation of enthusiasts discovering diving as recreation and adventure. They are two branches of the same story, united by the underwater world yet characterised from the outset by distinct personalities.

Fifty Fathoms, where the story began in 1953

The original Fifty Fathoms grew out of the personal diving experience of Jean-Jacques Fiechter, then Blancpain’s co-CEO. The solutions adopted for the watch helped establish many of the codes that would become familiar across the diving-watch world, and the Fifty Fathoms was subsequently adopted by several military navies.

For its 70th anniversary in 2023, Blancpain developed the Fifty Fathoms 70th Anniversary Act 1 by drawing not only on the original 1953 watch but also on two important stages in its evolution: the 50th Anniversary model of 2003 and the Fifty Fathoms introduced in 2007.

The unique version created for Only Watch added a distinctive colour interpretation dominated by blue.

Blue, sapphire and five days of autonomy

The blue unidirectional rotating bezel features a domed sapphire insert, while the dial has a gradient finish that darkens towards its outer edge. The luminous hour markers include Arabic numerals at 3, 6, 9 and 12 o’clock together with baton markers, built from multiple layers of Super-LumiNova® to enhance both depth and legibility.

The stainless-steel case measures 42.3 mm and houses the automatic calibre 1315. Three mainspring barrels provide a five-day power reserve, while the free-sprung balance is fitted with a silicon hairspring.

The transparent caseback reveals the movement and its 18-carat gold winding rotor, coated with a platinum-based NAC alloy and carrying the inscription Only Watch Blancpain.

Even the strap maintains a direct connection with the sea. Its NATO-style construction uses nylon reclaimed and recycled from fishing nets removed from the ocean during environmental clean-up operations.

Bathyscaphe was created for a different kind of diving

While the Fifty Fathoms is closely connected with the requirements of professional and military diving in the early 1950s, the Bathyscaphe represents an equally interesting cultural development.

Introduced in 1956, it appeared as recreational diving was opening the underwater world to a broader audience. Blancpain describes it as the civilian counterpart to the Fifty Fathoms, combining essential diving capabilities with more compact proportions and greater versatility for everyday wear.

For its 70th anniversary in 2026, the Manufacture chose to revisit one of the most distinctive interpretations in the model’s history, the 1968 Bathyscaphe.

The spirit of 1968 returns in 37.40 millimetres

The new Bathyscaphe 70th Anniversary, reference 5903 1110 063A, does not attempt to enlarge the past. Instead, it preserves the 37.40 mm diameter of the watch that inspired it, combined with a stainless-steel case measuring 10.60 mm in thickness.

The glass box crystal, slender case middle, polished surfaces and restrained proportions revive the aesthetic of the period. Even the Blancpain signature refers back to the logo used in the mid-20th century, while baton hands and indexes are highlighted by vintage-toned Super-LumiNova®.

The bezel maintains the narrow architecture of the historic model while bringing its materials up to date. The original black Hesalite insert has been replaced by black ceramic with lacquered numerals, improving resistance and legibility without changing the visual character of the watch.

Meteor grey and a 100-hour power reserve

The sunburst meteor grey dial keeps the visual language deliberately restrained. This approach is consistent with the original idea of the skin diver, designed to accompany underwater exploration while remaining discreet enough for everyday use away from the sea.

Inside is the automatic calibre 1150, comprising 210 components and 28 jewels, operating at 3 Hz and equipped with a silicon balance spring and a 100-hour power reserve. A sapphire caseback reveals the movement, while water resistance is rated to 30 bar.

A hand-stitched chocolate calfskin strap completes the watch, reinforcing its historical character while allowing the leather to develop a natural patina over time.

Two anniversaries, two ways of expressing the same sea

Placing the Fifty Fathoms 70th Anniversary Act 1 alongside the Bathyscaphe 70th Anniversary reveals how the same diving-watch culture can take very different forms.

The first has a stronger wrist presence, a blue sapphire bezel, five days of autonomy and an aesthetic that directly connects the contemporary Fifty Fathoms with a history that began in 1953. The second opts for a 37.40 mm case, proportions that are unusually restrained by modern diver standards and styling deliberately rooted in the late 1960s.

They are not competing interpretations. Instead, they represent two different relationships with the water: the instrument born from real diving experience and the skin diver created when the sea was also becoming a place for exploration, travel and leisure.

That is perhaps where their connection with the yachting world feels most natural. Beyond performance and engineering, both watches carry a history born beneath the surface, yet continue to tell the story of the sea after returning on board.
