A luxury yacht charter in the Mediterranean belongs to the second kind. Capri at sunrise, lunch in a quiet bay, Taormina viewed from the water and dinner served on deck can all become part of the same itinerary, shaped around the guests rather than a fixed schedule.

Chartering a crewed yacht is not simply about choosing a vessel. It means relying on a captain, a chef and a professional crew capable of turning a week at sea into a highly personal experience. Routes, anchorages, cuisine, water activities and time ashore are planned in advance and can often be adjusted during the voyage, depending on weather conditions, marina availability and local regulations.

Few destinations express the spirit of the Italian Dolce Vita as clearly as Capri. Approaching the island by yacht reveals the Faraglioni, Marina Piccola and Capri’s dramatic cliffs before guests even step ashore.

From here, the route can continue towards Positano, Amalfi, Nerano and the smaller harbours of the Gulf of Naples, combining afternoons at anchor with evenings in some of Italy’s most atmospheric coastal towns.

Further south, Taormina offers a different but equally cinematic setting. The Sicilian coastline, Mount Etna in the distance and the bays surrounding Isola Bella create one of the most recognisable landscapes in the Mediterranean.

A longer itinerary can connect Taormina with the Aeolian Islands, where Stromboli, Panarea, Salina and Vulcano bring together volcanic scenery, clear waters and a distinctive island lifestyle.

Costa Smeralda and Porto Cervo, elegance among granite and turquoise waters

The Costa Smeralda remains one of the defining destinations of international yachting. Porto Cervo is its best-known harbour, but the true appeal of a yacht charter emerges while cruising between Cala di Volpe, Romazzino, Capriccioli and the La Maddalena Archipelago.

Relatively short distances make it possible to change scenery several times in a single day. Guests may begin with a swim in a secluded bay, continue with lunch at a waterfront restaurant and return on board in time for sunset.

From northern Sardinia, the route can also extend towards southern Corsica and the Strait of Bonifacio, creating an itinerary between two islands that are geographically close but remarkably different in character.

Greece and the freedom to discover a different island every day

Greece does not offer one single yachting experience. It offers several different seas within the same country.

The Cyclades are the most iconic, with Mykonos, Paros, Naxos, Milos and Santorini. Whitewashed villages, small harbours, beaches best reached by sea and a nightlife ranging from international clubs to traditional tavernas define the region.

During the Meltemi season, both the route and the yacht must be selected carefully. Guests looking for generally calmer waters may prefer the Ionian Islands, where Corfu, Paxos, Lefkada, Ithaca, Kefalonia and Zakynthos offer greener landscapes and more sheltered cruising.

The Saronic Gulf, close to Athens, provides easy access to Hydra, Poros, Spetses and Aegina without requiring long passages.

The Dodecanese, including Rhodes, Patmos, Kos, Symi and Nisyros, combines history, varied architecture and less predictable cruising grounds. The Sporades, with Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos, offer forests, protected bays and a more relaxed atmosphere.

This variety makes Greece suitable for motor yachts, sailing yachts and crewed catamarans alike.

The French Riviera, the historic stage of the superyacht world

The French Riviera continues to be one of the world capitals of luxury yacht charter.

Monaco, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, Cannes, Antibes and Saint-Tropez can all be included in a relatively compact itinerary, leaving time for stops near the Lérins Islands or in quieter bays along the coast.

This route suits guests who want to combine life on board with restaurants, events, shopping and evenings in the places that shaped the image of the Riviera.

Yet the French coastline also has a quieter side. A short cruise away from the busiest marinas reveals pine forests, rocky coves, beaches and smaller harbours. Porquerolles and the other Hyères Islands can provide a more natural extension to the classic Riviera itinerary.

The Balearic Islands beyond nightlife

The Balearic Islands can support very different styles of holiday.

Mallorca offers sophisticated marinas, historic towns, mountain scenery and a coastline that changes constantly. Menorca is more intimate and natural, with sheltered coves and exceptionally clear water.

Ibiza combines beach clubs, restaurants and music with areas that remain unexpectedly peaceful, while Formentera is defined by light, pale beaches and uncomplicated anchorages.

An itinerary does not need to include every island. A week may be dedicated entirely to Mallorca and Menorca, or focused on Ibiza and Formentera, reducing cruising time and allowing more space for swimming, long lunches ashore and days spent using the yacht’s tender and water toys.

Barcelona, Valencia and the Costa del Sol from the water

Yacht charter in Spain is not limited to the Balearic Islands.

Barcelona and Valencia can serve as departure or arrival points for itineraries combining sailing, architecture, gastronomy and city life. They are particularly appealing to guests who want to spend a few days ashore before boarding or after completing their cruise.

Further south, the Costa del Sol offers a different environment, with Marbella and Puerto Banús as its main references for high-end yachting.

From this region, guests can plan coastal cruises or more ambitious routes towards the Strait of Gibraltar, taking distance, prevailing conditions and seasonal traffic into account.

Life on board does not follow a script

Life on a charter yacht can be refined without becoming formal.

Breakfast is served when guests wake up. Lunch may follow a swim in a secluded bay. Dinner can be prepared by the chef or arranged at a waterfront restaurant reached by tender.

Paddleboards, Seabobs, kayaks and other water toys allow guests to experience the sea directly rather than simply admire it from the deck.

Before departure, the charter broker collects information about dietary preferences, daily habits, interests and special requests.

This is why two charters along the same coastline can feel entirely different. One may be designed around family life and quiet anchorages, while another may focus on restaurants, events and nightlife.

How much does a luxury yacht charter cost

The price of a luxury yacht charter depends on the yacht’s size, age, season, crew, equipment and reputation.

The weekly charter fee is usually only the starting point. Additional operating expenses may include fuel, food, drinks, marina fees, local transfers, tender use and specific guest requests.

Professional yacht charter agreements commonly include an expense allowance known as the APA, Advanced Provisioning Allowance. This is used to cover operating costs during the charter.

Before signing the agreement, the broker should clearly explain what is included in the base rate, what remains excluded and which taxes may apply to the chosen itinerary.

For larger superyachts, published weekly rates can range from several hundred thousand euros to more than one million euros.

Choosing the yacht according to the journey

Length is not the only factor that matters.

For families, connecting cabins, stabilisers at anchor and shaded outdoor areas may be essential. A group of friends may prefer expansive decks, a beach club and a wide selection of water toys.

Guests who want the sensation of sailing will look for something very different from those who wish to cover longer distances quickly aboard a motor yacht.

The crew is equally important. The captain’s knowledge of the cruising area, the chef’s ability, the languages spoken on board and the organisation of the service can shape the experience as much as the yacht’s design.

Capri, Porto Cervo, Mykonos, Saint-Tropez and Ibiza retain their international appeal, but the journey often becomes more memorable during the unplanned stops, in a nameless bay, a small harbour restaurant or a night spent at anchor.

The modern Dolce Vita does not need to remain in one place. It can wake up to a different horizon every morning.
