With speeds of up to 10 knots, advanced controls and an acrylic cockpit, the Super Sub introduces a new form of underwater travel

Some vehicles are designed to observe the underwater world, while others attempt to change the way people travel through it. The Super Sub, developed by Dutch manufacturer U-Boat Worx, clearly belongs to the second group. Rather than simply descending into the ocean, it introduces speed, acceleration and agile handling to a category traditionally associated with slow, carefully controlled movement.

Rated to a depth of 300 metres and configured for two passengers and one pilot, this private submersible has been conceived as a dynamic machine, offering an experience that feels closer to flight than conventional underwater navigation.

A different way to travel beneath the surface

The character of the Super Sub becomes apparent as soon as it starts moving. Its configuration allows it to accelerate, bank, change direction and follow the shape of the seabed with a degree of fluidity rarely associated with a private submersible.

The manufacturer quotes a maximum speed of up to 10 knots, while sea trials and reports on the first completed unit recorded performance of around 9 knots. Either figure places it well ahead of most private submersibles and gives it enough pace to accompany some fast-moving marine animals for limited periods.

A shape created to move through water

Measuring 6.5 metres in length and weighing approximately nine tonnes, the Super Sub has a long, streamlined body inspired by the shape of a water droplet. This is far more than a styling decision. Each surface has been designed to reduce hydrodynamic resistance and keep the craft stable during acceleration, descent and ascent.

The structure has to accommodate batteries, propulsion systems, buoyancy controls and safety equipment without compromising its exterior form. The finished vehicle consequently looks less like a conventional miniature submarine and more like a high-performance machine, translating the visual language of the hypercar into an underwater environment.

Four thrusters supported by hydrofoil control

The primary propulsion system uses four 25 kW thrusters, supported by two additional 6 kW units. Horizontal power is coordinated with hydrofoil surfaces positioned towards the stern, enabling the craft to bank, turn and change depth without relying solely on vertical thrust.

This architecture creates smoother, more progressive trajectories. The Super Sub can follow a steep underwater wall, circle a wreck or move across changing terrain without repeatedly interrupting its forward motion. The seabed is therefore not viewed from an almost stationary platform, but explored along a three-dimensional route.

An uninterrupted view of the ocean

The fully acrylic pressure hull is located at the front of the craft, providing a panoramic view unobstructed by batteries, ballast tanks or structural components. The pilot sits behind the two guests, leaving passengers directly connected to the surrounding environment.

As natural light fades and the exterior lamps illuminate the water, the large transparent enclosure changes the perception of distance. Fish, coral formations and shipwrecks appear remarkably close, while the absence of conventional windows reduces the feeling of being inside an enclosed vehicle.

Comfort designed for deeper journeys

The cabin is air-conditioned and features individually adjustable airflow, a high-fidelity Bluetooth audio system and refrigerated storage for drinks. Supportive seats and five-point harnesses reflect the more athletic nature of the craft, keeping occupants secure during acceleration and changes of angle.

Boarding takes place through a generously sized upper hatch designed to simplify access from a support vessel. With a stated operational endurance of eight hours, the Super Sub can undertake extended dive programmes without treating passenger comfort as an afterthought.

Technology working alongside the pilot

The SHARC control system coordinates the thrusters and hydrofoils, translating the pilot’s commands into precise underwater movement. Automatic functions can hold the selected depth or heading, while the UIS information system displays the main navigation data on a touchscreen.

A sonar system with a 130-degree field of view and a range of up to 100 metres helps detect obstacles and read the shape of the terrain ahead. This support becomes particularly valuable around reefs, underwater canyons and wrecks, where direct visibility may not reveal the entire route in sufficient time.

Safety beyond performance

Speed and manoeuvrability still require strict operating procedures. The Super Sub includes systems intended to prevent it from exceeding its certified depth, maintain a selected course, mark its position at the surface and begin an automatic ascent should the pilot become unable to operate the craft.

An emergency drop weight can be released to increase buoyancy, while a minimum of 96 hours of life support includes oxygen, carbon dioxide filtration, emergency electrical power, communication equipment, water and food. Each unit is also subject to the testing and independent verification required for DNV certification.

A new companion for explorer yachts

The Super Sub is not a compact recreational toy. It requires a suitably equipped mothership for transport, launch, recovery and technical assistance. With its substantial dimensions, nine-tonne weight and a reported value of around €10 million for the first unit, it is primarily intended for large yachts and support vessels with dedicated technical spaces.

Its potential, however, extends beyond luxury entertainment. A submersible capable of following the seabed, reaching a wreck quickly and covering a wider area during a single dive may also support private research, environmental observation and underwater documentation.

From passive observation to active experience

Personal submersibles have long provided access to places beyond the reach of recreational diving, traditionally placing the emphasis on depth and visibility. The Super Sub introduces another defining element, movement.

It does not simply invite passengers to observe the sea through a transparent dome. It allows them to follow its contours, travel through its open spaces and experience its vertical dimension. That may ultimately be its most compelling achievement, turning a gradual descent towards the seabed into a genuine journey through the water.
