CAOZ 14, the Nauta Design refit brings new light to the 56-metre Perini Navi

The 56-metre Perini Navi CAOZ 14 gains new light and continuity through a refit created for more natural life on board

Nauta Design gives CAOZ 14 a brighter main deck, combining open spaces, lighter materials and a closer connection with the sea

Some yachts move through time under different names, owners and cruising programmes while retaining a character that remains instantly recognisable. CAOZ 14 is one of them. Built by Perini Navi in 2007, the 56-metre sailing yacht was previously known as Selene and Parsifal IV.

The refit conceived by Nauta Design focused mainly on the main deck, reshaping the interior into a brighter and more open environment with a stronger connection to the sea. Rather than imposing an entirely new identity, the project introduced a contemporary chapter to an already distinguished yacht.

The heritage of the Perini Navi 56-metre series

CAOZ 14 belongs to Perini Navi’s renowned 56-metre sailing yacht series, recognised for its aluminium construction, generous interior volume and sailing systems developed for comfortable long-distance cruising.

The naval architecture was created by Ron Holland, while the original exterior and interior design came from Perini Navi. The yacht has a maximum beam of 11.52 metres and a variable draught ranging from 3.95 to 9.73 metres, depending on the position of the centreboard.

A refit shaped around space

The project began with the aim of making life on board more relaxed, welcoming and suitable for family use. The original arrangement included corridors, partitions and enclosed connections that interrupted sightlines and reduced the sense of continuity between the yacht’s interior and the surrounding landscape.

Nauta Design therefore concentrated on the way space is perceived and experienced. Removing the crew passageway on the port side created a full-beam main saloon, while the central staircase was redesigned with floating steps and transparent surfaces. The main deck now feels wider and visually connected from port to starboard.

Bringing the sea into the saloon

A central aspect of the refit was the relationship between indoor and outdoor living. The former doors separating the aft cockpit from the main saloon were replaced by automatic sliding glass panels, allowing daylight to travel further inside while making movement between the two areas more fluid.

A Smart Glass partition was also introduced between the forward lounge and the wheelhouse. It can become opaque whenever privacy is required or remain transparent to open a continuous view towards the bow, adding depth to the entire main deck.

Lighter materials and a contemporary character

The interior transformation is reinforced by a new palette based on light oak, white lacquered surfaces, brighter flooring and carefully selected fabrics. The darker tones of the previous décor have given way to a calmer and more natural atmosphere.

Custom-made pieces are combined with furnishings from established international design brands. Shelves, niches and storage units provide space for books, artworks and personal collections, allowing the yacht to feel refined without becoming overly formal. Despite her dimensions, CAOZ 14 now conveys the warmth of a home designed to be genuinely lived in.

Spaces designed to adapt

Particular attention was given to ergonomics and to the ability of individual areas to serve more than one purpose. The forward section of the saloon includes a relaxed television lounge and an adjustable table that can be used for coffee, informal dining or family activities.

The main dining table can also change in both height and size, responding to different occasions throughout the day. This flexibility helps remove unnecessary formality and supports a more spontaneous style of life on board.

Lighting becomes part of the architecture

The lighting concept was developed with Cantalupi and includes different scenarios created through ceiling spotlights, integrated shelf lighting and discreet light sources positioned around the base of the furniture.

A new automation system manages lighting, blinds and other onboard functions. The pantry, wheelhouse and main-deck day head were also upgraded, ensuring that crew and service areas follow the same visual language as the guest spaces.

A more inviting outdoor living area

The aft cockpit was renewed with custom-designed sofas and coffee tables replacing the previous loose furniture. A teak ceiling was added above the seating and dining areas, bringing warmth and a stronger sense of identity to this important outdoor space.

The work was completed in Genoa by MMC Allestimenti in approximately six months, despite the operational restrictions in place during the pandemic. Nauta Design records the refit year as 2020.

Preserving character while moving forward

CAOZ 14 illustrates how a major sailing yacht refit can achieve far more than replacing finishes and furniture. The project changed the way the main deck is viewed, crossed and enjoyed, while preserving the unmistakable proportions and naval character of the original Perini Navi design.

Her proven architecture is now matched by a lighter and more contemporary interior language. CAOZ 14 retains her heritage, but returns to the sea with spaces that respond more naturally to daylight, the surrounding views and the people living on board.
